While living in the UAE, I’ve been lucky enough to get three weeks off at Christmas, and I usually try to make the most of it by stopping somewhere in Europe to visit the Christmas markets. Over the years, I’ve traveled to some amazing ones, including Munich, Prague, Budapest, and last year I stopped in Vienna, which has been my favourite one yet. I absolutely love Christmas, and there’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit than strolling through a festive market with the lights, music, and seasonal treats filling the air – it’s just magical! ✨
Friday: Arrival & Dinner
- Afternoon: After direct flight from Dubai with Wizz Air, I landed in Vienna early afternoon and headed straight to the hotel to check in. Here I met up with my family, who had travelled directly from Dublin with Ryanair. The excitement of the weekend ahead was kicking in as we freshened (and wrapped) up 🧣🧤.
- Evening: To start the trip on a relaxed note, we wandered over to a cozy Irish pub. It was the perfect spot to enjoy some comfort food and a drink, easing into the festive spirit with the lively atmosphere. A great way to wind down after the flight and get into holiday mode!

Saturday; A Day of Festive Exploration
- Morning: We started Saturday with breakfast at the hotel before heading out to explore the snowy streets of Vienna. The city was a winter wonderland, and there was a great buzz about the place as we passed several charming Christmas markets. We decided to pop into Aida for a light bite and a delicious coffee, enjoying the cozy ambiance before continuing our day ☕🍰.
- Midday: While wandering through the markets, I was thrilled to meet up with friends who were visiting from Bratislava for the day. We spent a few hours catching up and chatting while enjoying the festive atmosphere together. It was lovely to share this experience with them! We shared some snacks from the market stalls, while taking in the twinkling lights and delightful holiday scents. I loved how the markets offered proper cups for hot drinks; you pay a €5 deposit for the cup and get your money back when you return it. It felt nice to sip my warm Glühwein from a real cup instead of a disposable one, adding to the experience 🍷🍻.
- Afternoon: The markets were absolutely stunning – one of the nicest I’ve ever visited! The lights were incredible, creating a magical atmosphere as we strolled around, taking it all in. After a few hours outdoors, we decided to warm up and headed to The Long Hall for a bit of indoor comfort. The pub had a cozy vibe, and it was a welcome break 🥶. The food looked lovely so we made a reservation to come back the following day for dinner.
- Evening: To end the day perfectly, we sought out a traditional Austrian dinner. We indulged in some authentic Wiener Schnitzel, which was every bit as delicious as I had hoped. It was a wonderful way to wrap up a day filled with festive cheer and Viennese charm.

Sunday; Schönbrunn Palace & City Strolls
Morning: After enjoying breakfast at the hotel, we took a taxi up to Schönbrunn Palace. The palace grounds were absolutely stunning, blanketed in snow, and walking through the gardens was a delight. Coming from such a busy city, it was so nice to just enjoy the peaceful walk and fresh air.
Midday: We took our time exploring the area and the incredible views of the city from the palace grounds. It was breathtaking! I was delighted, there was also a Christmas market on-site. We had a few hot drinks (needed to keep warm) and tasty snacks. The market was filled with unique stalls, and I loved the cheerful energy it added to our visit 🌭🎄.
Afternoon: After exploring the palace grounds, we made our way back into Vienna. We strolled through the city, passing the beautiful streets lined with horses, which added a classic touch to the scenery. Along the way, we admired the ancient ruins and wandered through the shopping streets, where the buildings and streets were decorated so beautifully for the season. We also stopped by St. Stephen’s Cathedral, marveling at its stunning architecture before continuing our walk through the city.
Evening: To wrap up the day, we returned to The Long Hall for dinner. The cozy atmosphere was just what we needed after a long day of exploring. Enjoying another delightful meal there felt like the perfect way to end an incredible weekend filled with festive joy and beautiful sights. I left feeling grateful for the lovely experiences and memories made in this magical city.

Monday; Departure
- Morning: Before heading back to the airport, we had breakfast in the hotel and a morning relaxing there. Afterward, we packed up and checked out, making it to the airport in time for my midday flight back to Dublin.
Vienna was such a magical experience, and the Christmas markets, in particular, made this trip unforgettable. There’s no better way to get into the Christmas spirit than wandering through the festive stalls, sipping mulled wine, and soaking in the atmosphere. Vienna’s markets, especially Rathausplatz and Schönbrunn Palace, were truly something special – I can’t wait to return! 🎄🎅❄️.
